The biggest news from the debate held by the ABC network was the result of an ABC/Washington Post poll on Iowa, which put Senator Obama marginally ahead with 27 per cent of the vote, Hillary Clinton and John Edwards on 26 per cent each and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson on 11 per cent.

"Everything I hear is that it's still a wide-open race, particularly for Clinton, Obama and Edwards," director of communications for the Iowa state Senate Democrats Ron Parker said.

He said some candidates had deluded themselves that they were ahead, but Iowans tended to make up their minds late.
